Bangalore is known as India’s Silicon Valley, and this city is expanding on all sides, from metro connectivity, IT hubs, real estate, and airport connectivity.
The Karnataka government has decided to expand city connectivity with its plan to build a second airport in Bangalore. This project is going to turn into a masterpiece for the city.
The population in Bangalore is increasing gradually every year, and the Kempegowda International Airport is getting steady cargo traffic for the long term. So, the Karnataka government plans to implement the second airport project, which provides the passengers with easy access, and it also makes the city develop with new IT companies, real estate and all the basic amenities around the area.
Kempegowda International Airport is seeing an increase in the passenger count, and as per the research, by 2030, the passenger count will increase more, which can’t be handled by KIA. So, the Karnataka government has decided that this is the right time to plan for the second airport in South Bangalore.
The city is expanding with population, so this airport project will provide easy connectivity for the passengers. The government also has economic growth from new IT hubs, businesses, the real estate market and all facilities around the airport.
The government wants Bangalore to be a future-ready city where all connectivity should be accessible. This project will help the city attract more population, and the growth will be at a higher rate.
To avoid the business, they are planning fast with this second airport project. Because the Tamil Nadu government has a plan to bring a project to Hosur, the nearest area to Bangalore. This makes their state more popular and has a higher investment rate. So, the Karnataka government wants to implement the project as soon as possible.
The Karnataka government has planned this second airport with two sites: one is on the Nelamangala-Kunigal road, and the other two sites are on the Kanakapura road near Harohalli. The Airports Authority of India has been informed to submit the final report of these sites soon so that it can measure the land availability, airspace clearance and transport connectivity around the particular site.
The Karnataka government has decided to plan this second airport as large as Kempegowda International Airport, around 4,500 to 5,000 acres. This second airport should be around 50 km from the centre of the city so that it can get easy access to both domestic and international operations. This second airport site should have easy connectivity in transport, outer ring road, metro connectivity and major facilities within a few minutes of travel.
The government decided to give a high priority to Kanakapura road sites, where connectivity is getting easier. Because this site has easy access to Electronic City, Bidadi and Hosur. And the road projects, like the Satellite Town Ring Road and Bengaluru-Mysore Motorway, make every trip to the airport easier and faster. The final decision by the government will be taken according to the airspace rules and defence restrictions.
The Kempegowda International Airport has a legal agreement that no other airport should be built within 150 km of KIA until 2033. This will make the KIA’s business and the investments a loss. But the government decided to avoid the airspace traffic, which is already increasing to KIA. So, the government decided to start the plan, and getting approval for the land will be delayed until 2033.
The government is planning for the city’s long-term growth. So, the AAI report will be submitted by the end of this year, and the government will finalise and announce the location of the new project. As per that, the land acquisition and planning will start around 2027, and the construction of the project will be over by early 2033.
This particular project is going to transform the city into a higher growth rate. Business development, real estate, is going to increase with this new project. Bangalore is booming in every sector.
KIA is facing a higher rate of passengers that cannot be handled by them. So, the government decided to build a second airport, which increases the growth rate and avoids cargo traffic.
Kempegowda International Airport is the existing airport in Bangalore.
The government has not yet finalised the exact location, but the planning site may be near Kanakapura Road or Nelamangala-Kunigal Road.
It takes approximately 50 to 60 km from the centre of the city.
This project will be developed by the Karnataka government with a tied partnership with the Airports Authority of India, and the project will be similar to the KIA.
